Grime characteristics

Background Information on Grime

Grime is music that started out in the UK it originates mainly from elements of other known genres such as reggae, rap, jungle and garage music Americans would generally call it Hip-Hop. It first was
brought out in early 2000s so compared to other genres its quite recent; its known as a very fast paced type of music generally 140 bpm.

The main theme for grime music is lyrics on making a better life for themselves or making themselves publicly known or how there life sytle is an impact on them.

Typical grime locations for music videos:

mostly set in streets or cities/ slums/ council estates or the area in which they grew up in. Prime example can be of N Dubz earliest video of ' I swear' set in there home town.

Typrical Characters :

The artists are themsselves in the music video unless the lyrics have a certain type of narrative. This is a good thing as it closes a link between the artisit and the audience helps the audience become more familiar with the  artist but most of all helps the audience being able to relate to their situation and social living, as they could have the same upbringing as the artist shows in his song.
However sometimes if the song is a narrative the artist will include extras to help the song lyrics relate to the video.

Typical Mise-En-Scene

The mise en scene is very specific to the brand image of the artists, usually they would wear causal clothing to what they wear on normal days, e.g. tracksuits if the video is filmed on the streets. They will be dressed in specific way to promote their brand image.

Typical narrative

The narrative behind most grime music videos is realism.
The narrative may also evolve around other narratives but the main would be o there own life. The music videos usually are linked towards their past or home life to relate to their music and show compassion to present to the audience there normal life situations happens to alot of people. N dubz take a strong view on realism e.g. papa if you can hear me,

Typical media language
The media language is very important in any music video as it is the different shots that help create the story of which the music video is telling the audience, because the music genre grime evolves around the artists life and their stories its most likely that there are many close up shots and medium shots to show their emotion and facial expressions are  clear.
