Media Trip

As a class we visited the Richmix Studios in Brick Lane. During this trip watching the presentations and lectures where we were shown the theory of music videos and examples.




The usual features of a music video
  • Length of the song between 2 and 5 minutes
  • Usually features the artist
  • Can tell a story


In the 1930s started the Experimentation : Duke box

1940’s- Soundies

Video jukeboxes, which was the updated dukebox which can showcase the artist konwn as scopitones
Example of this is Nat King Cole- Firm from fro
Was seen to be racy because the camera pans down her legs- which was out the ordinary during these times

1960s - Promo films began e.g. Elvis Presley and the Beetles.


1970s -More common for the promo films and music videos becasme a break through for queen.


1981 - MTV was created and British bands like Duran Duran,Madness e.t.c were often performing.

Madonna was the first female artist breakthrough for America with there video which most people thought was to sexual.

Then continued on was the breakthough for Black artists Michael Jackson with his popular video of 'Thriller' more seen as a short film being 11 minutes long with a long intro and a film like sequence running throughout this was a major breakthough in film industry and thousand of people waited till 12 o clock for the relase of this famous video.

50 cent with the song ' Candy shop' was the begining of music videos using females in a sexual context within his video, older people believed that this was not right for people to watch however this has been carried on  throughout the years and become more popular with white and black male and female artists.

Methods of Analysis
 - Genre characteristics
- Visual Relationship music and lyrics
- Need to sell the aritst as a star
- Voyeurism/looking
- Intertexuality

Step 0 - Exercise by learning to lip-sync using simple edit or doing exercises such as karaoke

Step 1- Choose a track and make sure the timing is right and not too long

Step 2 Write a treatment thats realistic, strong and simple

Step 3 Plan peoples props costumes and shoot early with a story board ready and performers rehearsed

Step 4 Set up a blog to update your ongoing process throughout this course work

Step 5 Know your equipment also test different shots and angles and use the tripod and the editing programme with an audiable source of music

Step 6 10 times



·         Step 5- Know your equipment
·         Step 6-The shoot. Lots of close ups. Shoot more than you think you need.
·         Step 7- Capture your footage. Label everything and be organised.
·         Step 8- The edit. Sync up performance first, cut and cut again.
·         Step 9- Screening
·         Step 10- Analysis
