We took a trip to Richmix Education located in Brick Lane, London. First we sat in a lecture where a presentation was shown about the history of music video's, codes and convections and top tips for making our own music video's. We was shown music video's from Len Lye- A colour Box right through the different years to finish on Jay-Z- 99 Problems. In the afternoon sesson we had another presentation with clips by Liz Kessler who is a music video director. We also had a question and answer session with Corin Hardy who is also a music video director. I took notes throughout the lecture, below are my notes.
These are a few of the links from the day's event:
· Lasts length of song
· Generally features the artist- not always though
· Can tell a story
· Needs to be visually memorable and worth seeing again
1930’s- experimentation's
A colour box- Len Lye. This follows music by pictures on the screen.
1940’s- Soundies
Video jukeboxes, 4000 sold in USA.
Example of this is Nat King Cole- Firm from fro
Was seen to be racy because the camera pans down her legs- in this time people didn’t like that.
1960’s
More music video’s were made to go with singles. Elvis and the Beatles made this popular.
1981
MTV brought out a music channel. This was the first ever music video channel. They showed mainly British bands. The first band shown on the channel was ‘Video killed the radio star’.
Madonna started a trend as a female American artist. The budgets went up from here.
Black music want played until Michael Jackson came about, this was his ‘Thriller’.
This opened the door for other black artists such as 50 cent. His music video for ‘Candy Shop’ is very excess from big cars and big houses and lots of girls. Jay-Z is another black artist- ’99 Problems’. This video is edgy and pushed things to the limit with violence and sexuality.
Lego is often used in music video’s and also the computer game ‘Sims’. Homemade video’s can be very effective.
