http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=98WtmW-lfeE&ob=av2e

Through use of Goodwins theory of analysis is will analyse Katheryn Hudson (Katy Perry)  single 'teenage dream' american singer and songwriter typically known in the genre of pop.

Goodwins theory of analysis is a six point plan which is presented in music videos

  • Music Videos demonstrate genre characteristics
  • Relationship between lyrics and visuals
  • Relationship between music and visuals
  • Demands of closeups
  • Reference to notion of looking
  • Inter-textual reference

According to Goodwin's Theory;

Genre characteristics:
The female artist Katy Perry demonstrates some genre characteristics of a pop music video   as typical Pop music videos  as the character that stars in the video consist of the protagainst- the main singer, artist, dancers and extras most commonly used in narrative based videos. Katy Perry ' Teenage Dream' consists of many of these characteristics, her being the main character of a narrative based story of a young couple in love. People also relate pop music to beaches, party's and high school in the characteristics which have been used as the locations during this video. The typical ideologies that are shown in most common pop videos is Love which is Katy Perry s main focus in this video.

Relationship between the lyrics and the visuals
The lyrics are based on being in love with someone who makes you feel young again "You make me feel like I'm living a teenage dream" which has created a strong relationship between lyrics and visuals as the video is connected through lyrics throughout. The visual gives a sense that Katy is with a man (who we see getting intimate on several occasions), and there relationship brings out the youth within them the visuals show by doing  stereotypical things which teenagers do e.g. the beach party, the video is naturalistic through use of calm dreamy contrast. Within this video we see Katys vulnerable young side to her within the lyrics life changes as you grow older half presenting the video as if it was once in her memory when she was younger. Throughout the video most lyric matches to the visual e.g 'lets go all the way tonight no regrets just love' goes straight to the scene in the hotel room giving the impression that the lyrics are linked to the scene.

Relationship between the music and the visuals:
Often the video will try and represent the music through the use of the cut to go with the beat or key rhythm, colour also can be used to show a development in the song the change in mise en scene or camerawork can signal the same type of thing.
The beat of the music can be seen to follow the cut of the shots, in particular when the first verse cuts to the chorus, and there is a shot of the male lead accelerating the car, reflecting the increasing speed of the song. Therefore, in this sense, the relationship between the music and visuals is an illustrative one.

Demand of close-ups:
Th main feature of most music videos is the cut tot the close up of the signers face thisis because the voice is seen as the most important part of pop music.
Right from the start of the song, close ups of Katy are seen, from her singing in the car to her in the locker room. Apart from her, the only other character to have many close ups is her lover to show the importance of their relationship and what the song/narrative is about many close up shots are taken of them both together and showing their body language.  However there is a few close up of props which are used towards the end to show there youth e.g. bikes, sparklers, djs and different use of costume.

Reference to notion of looking
Throughout the music video there is sexual display of Katy during the bedroom scene and close up camera work to parts of her body which imply sexualised display, by wearing few clothes in most scenes e.g. hotel room where her underwear is on display this gives the element to the notion of looking. It presents passion between the two characters by close ups of the artists body however fitting into the song lyrics 'skin tight jeans'

Towards the begining of the video katy seems very young with during the car scene and the beach however as soon as it gets to the hotel seen you see a more intimate side to ther with the male character with genre characteristics of her in her  stating the song. There is also the male character which is presented with genre characteristics of a sterotypical male figure boxing and presents the male as dominant figure as she over watches him with an innocent look The end of the song brings a strong image towards teenage love when he wraps his jacket which is very american like in films on teenage love as most male teenagers and female act after their ' first love'

Inter-textual reference
